It is not known when eggs were first decorated
but the egg is used as a symbol for the re-birth
of Christ at Easter. The decorating of eggs
by painting and etching is still widespread
in Eastern Europe. The strength of the ovoid
(egg) shape has also been used in the design
of pottery and metal utensils for thousands
of years.
Carl Faberge used the egg shape for some of
his enamelled, gold, silver and precious stones
creations for the Russian Tsars at the end
of the nineteenth century. This possibly inspired
the Egg Crafters of today to use egg shells
for their own creations. Eggs are not only
painted but cut and shaped to make trinket
boxes, clocks, ornaments, etc.
Egg Crafting as a hobby is very popular
in North America and is gaining popularity
in other countries especially in Great Britain.
With a coated button egg that has been turned
into a pendant or an ostrich egg that has
been carefully cut and decorated as a music
box, it is a work of art to rival any sculpture
or painting that hangs in a museum.
These beautiful works of art make great gifts
for those looking for something special and
unique for the "hard to buy for" people
or collectors. Please keep in mind that the
eggs are not mass produced. What makes it unique
is that each egg is'one-of-a-kind' egg and cannot
be replicated. Each egg has its own design,
and each design takes hours (sometimes days)
to do, some many hours more than others.
